The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) MENA zone office asked Osman Consulting to support the capacity building of the Saudi Red Crescent Authority (SRCA). Building the strengths and capacities of National Societies is at the core of IFRC’s Strategy 2020, especially relevant where the MENA region is going through challenging times. The training is being held in Riyadh with 22 participants (of which 3 female) representing disaster management staff and volunteers from across the country and contributes to the realisation of the SRCA and IFRC MENA MoU on closer collaboration. Its key natural hazard at home is floods, though it is also significantly engaged in supporting disaster management abroad and of course hosts many millions of pilgrims each year especially in Makkah which lead to crowd related disaster risks (the SRCA plays a significant role in managing these risks). The SRCA recently formed a specialised emergency response team (Saudi Humanitarian Emergency Aid and Response Team (Saudi HEART)) to provide emergency response to disasters both within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and in support of international humanitarian response activities.
This is not the first time that Osman Consulting has provided Sphere training in the Middle East, see e.g. our work on this in Tunisia, UAE, Turkey (for Syria), Libya, and also in Jeddah before in Saudi Arabia itself. For some coverage of this event: the Sphere website, ArabHum.
